View detailsAfrica on Wheels is a well-established and reputable car hire company based in Windhoek, Namibia. Founded in 1999, the company has over 25 years of experience in providing 4x4 vehicles for self-drive tours through Namibia and the wider Southern African region. What started from the high demand for reliable used cars at good prices has evolved into one of Namibia's most trusted specialist 4x4 rental operations.
Located at 135 Sam Nujoma Drive in Windhoek, Africa on Wheels operates a focused fleet of approximately 20 four-wheel-drive vehicles — deliberately smaller than the large rental chains, which allows for hands-on attention to vehicle condition, personalised service, and flexible pricing structures for long-term rentals, groups, or solo travellers.
Africa on Wheels is a 4x4-only operation — every vehicle in the fleet is built for off-road capability. The line-up includes the Toyota Hilux Double Cab (2.4L and 2.8L diesel, both manual and automatic), the Toyota Fortuner for comfortable lodge-to-lodge travel, the legendary Toyota Land Cruiser 79 Series (single and double cab), the stretched Toyota Land Cruiser 76 for groups, and the flagship Toyota Land Cruiser 300 for those who want maximum comfort and capability.
All camping-equipped vehicles come with rooftop tents (popup or hardshell options available), fridges, and comprehensive camping gear. Tent upgrades — from standard popup to XL or family-size hardshell — are available at modest daily rates, letting you customise your setup to match your group and route.
Africa on Wheels stands out as one of the few Namibia operators that permits cross-border travel to all neighbouring countries — and beyond. Their vehicles are allowed in Botswana, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Zambia, and even Angola (at a higher permit fee). This makes Africa on Wheels the go-to choice for multi-country overland expeditions: Namibia-Botswana circuits via the Caprivi Strip, Namibia-to-Cape Town routes through South Africa, or adventurous Angola expeditions that most operators simply won't support.
Cross-border permits cost N$500 per country (N$1,000 for Angola) and must be arranged at booking. This transparent pricing, combined with the breadth of permitted destinations, makes Africa on Wheels uniquely positioned for ambitious Southern African itineraries.
Africa on Wheels' team speaks English, German, and Afrikaans — covering the three most common languages among Namibia's international and domestic visitors. Customer care is a stated top priority, and the company strives to deliver the best service for an enjoyable holiday experience. Flexible pricing structures are available for long-term rentals, group bookings, and solo travellers, making it adaptable to a wide range of travel plans and budgets.

Africa on Wheels operates an exclusively 4x4 Toyota fleet from its Windhoek base. Options include the Toyota Hilux Double Cab (2.4L/2.8L diesel), the Toyota Fortuner SUV, the legendary Land Cruiser 79 Series, the stretched Land Cruiser 76 for groups, and the flagship Land Cruiser 300. Travel to Botswana, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Zambia, and Angola is permitted — more destinations than almost any other Namibia operator. Permit fees from N$500 per country.
Flexible tent upgrades
Upgrade from standard popup to XL rooftop tent (N$40/day), family tent (N$70/day), or hardshell popup (N$70/day). Customise your sleeping setup to match your group.
Trilingual service
Africa on Wheels' team speaks English, German, and Afrikaans — covering the main languages of Namibia's visitor base.
While most Namibia car hire companies limit cross-border travel to one or two neighbouring countries, Africa on Wheels permits travel to six: Botswana, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Zambia, and even Angola — a destination that most operators won't touch due to the logistical complexity.
This makes Africa on Wheels the natural choice for multi-country overland expeditions. Popular routes include the Namibia-Botswana circuit via the Caprivi Strip and Chobe National Park, the Windhoek-to-Cape Town route through South Africa, Victoria Falls loops through Zimbabwe and Zambia, and adventurous Angola expeditions for experienced overlanders.
Cross-border permits are straightforward: N$500 per country (N$1,000 for Angola), arranged at booking. Combined with a fleet of proven 4x4 vehicles — from the Hilux for standard routes to the Land Cruiser 79 for the most demanding terrain — Africa on Wheels delivers genuine overland capability that backs up the promise of "Africa on Wheels."

If you want a luxury car to travel through Namibia, there is absolutely no better option than Africa on Wheels. They have a Land Cruiser 300 GXR and we recently took a trip all the way to the north of Namibia, to the Zambezi region, and what an incredible drive it was. Great on the tar road, great off the tar road through national parks and thick sand, and it was just an incredible vehicle. 10 out of 10 would recommend if you’re looking for a more upmarket and luxury vehicle for your next Namibia journey.

4000 kilometers with an AWD from Africa on wheels. Great service from start to finish. No problems with the car, no flat tires, no issues at all. Thanks for a great uneventful unforgettable vacation.

We rented a car from Africa on Wheels, and unfortunately, the experience came with some serious issues. At one point, the car caught fire due to a solenoid malfunction. Fortunately, we had a full-day trip planned with another car, which gave the rental company time to handle the repairs without disrupting our plans. They were quick to fix the issue, and we were lucky it happened in the city - if it had occurred in a remote area without any connection, it could have turned into a real adventure. Providing satellite phones for such situations might be worth considering. Some of these issues might have been down to bad luck, but after picking the car back up, I noticed the windshield wipers weren’t working - likely due to a blown fuse - which forced me to handle the repairs ourselves, costing us additional time. Even more concerning was that when the car caught fire, I couldn’t locate the fire extinguisher and ended up spending two hours trying to find and buy it. Somehow this fact was overlooked during the initial pickup. That said, after these issues were resolved, the car took us across Namibia without any further major problems. Despite these issues, Africa on Wheels didn’t offer any compensation or discount for the inconvenience and safety concerns we faced. Overall, I believe deducting one star is fair, given the seriousness of the problems and the potential risks involved.
